ULTIMATE FRISBEE TOURNAMENT
Printable Version   Printable Version
Ultimate Frisbee

WHAT IS ULTIMATE?
Ultimate is an exciting, non-contact team sport, played by thousands the world over. It mixes the best features of sports such as Soccer, Basketball, American Football and Netball into an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game. To compete at the top level, Ultimate players require an unmatched degree of speed, stamina and agility. Yet the simplicity of the rules means it's easy and fun for newcomers to pick up.

HOW IS IT PLAYED?
Ultimate is played between two teams of seven players on a large rectangular pitch. A line drawn across the pitch at either end creates two "endzones" (like in American Football). These are the goal-scoring areas. A goal is scored when a team completes a pass to a player standing (or more likely running) in the endzone they are attacking.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

The Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 64m by 37m, with endzones 18m deep.

Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defence throws ("pulls") the disc to the offence. A regulation game has seven players per team.

Scoring -- Each time the offence completes a pass in the defence’s endzone, the offence scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.

Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.

Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defence immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offence.

Substitutions -- Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.

Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.

Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players are expected to resolve their own disputes.

Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair-play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic enjoyment of play.

Tor Turtles - Glastonbury Team
Tor Turtles - Glastonbury Team

There were 32 teams competing, but because one of the teams couldn’t be present, a Glastonbury team who called themselves the Tor Turtles was put forward. Team members were Finn Andrews, Ollie Gordon, Jon Davis, Joe Shepperd, Tim (Mario) Broxup, Dan Poole, Leo Goolden, Alex Reiner (not pictured). Although not placed in the Frisbee Competion, they came second in the Vollyball and were congratulated for their spirit in competing at this level for the first time. They fully intend to compete at next year’s Ultimate Frisbee Tournament at the Tor Leisure Centre when they hope to be a serious challenge. Tor leisure Centre Manager Rick Cook has promised to leave the pitch markings in place for them and any other team to practice on. If you are keen to explore this further call Rick Cook on 01458 832393.
