Glastonbury Abbey

Glastonbury Abbey
Visit Glastonbury to see a magnificent, evocative and awe-inspiring ruined Abbey. It is set in peaceful, beautiful parkland of 36 acres (15 hectares), in the centre of the ancient market town of Glastonbury.
The Abbey is steeped in history and legend. Traditionally it is the first Christian sanctuary in Britain. It is said to have been visited by Joseph of Arimathea, St Patrick, and St David. Many people believe that the Holy Thorn trees in the grounds, which blossom twice a year, originated from Joseph of Arimathea planting his staff at Glastonbury. Legend has it that King Arthur and his Queen were buried here.
The Abbey has a museum, with a model of the Abbey as it was in 1539, the 16th century Othery Cope (magnificently restored), brass rubbing, a children's display and displays about the history of the town. We have an actor (April to October), playing a figure from the past describing life in the Abbey. In the park there are wildlife and fishponds, an herb garden and a traditional cider apple orchard. Picnicking is welcomed. We look forward to seeing you.
Please visit our official website at: www.glastonburyabbey.com At the end of May each there is a magnificant flower festival in the Abbey Abbey Flower Festival (1)
